Various internet forums mention not to use aftermarket thermostats in Subaru engines. The pictures below shows why. A ‘Halfords’ aftermarket thermostat on the right (gold), and a genuine Subaru one on the left (silver) for comparison.
Notice the difference in size of the opening and wax capsule. The Subaru thermostat must have three times the flow area when open compared to the aftermarket one.
