Converting an Engine from an Automatic Subaru to Manual Specification:

Fortunately, Subaru automatic engines are very similar to manual ones, so can easily be converted. The obvious thing to convert is the removal of the torque converter drive plate, and it’s replacement with a flywheel and clutch:

Drive plate Removal and Flywheel Installation:

The engine block and crank are identical on automatic and manual Subaru engines. This means you can simply unbolt the torque converter drive plate, and replace it with a flywheel:

There are lots of different types of Subaru flywheels. Click here for a guide to how to identify them

There is also a more subtle difference between between automatic and manual spec engines. The manual spec engines have a guide around the cam belt drive pulley on the crank. It’s only purpose can be to prevent the belt jumping teeth on a manual engine, as they can change revs at a much faster rate then an auto engine (if you miss the a gear). The belt guides are not expensive from Subaru, and are simple to fit , with just two screws. Setting the gap between the guide and the belt is critical. It is well worth fitting the guide, as the Subaru engineers would have cost saved it out if it were not essential, and I have seen an otherwise healthy engine with a belt which had slipped two teeth, despite having a guide.

The above is a concise version of the bellhousing kit instructions, which are supplied on a CD as an HTML file, and are in a ‘Haynes manual’ type format. They are very detailed, and clicking each paragraph number pops up a high resolution photo.
