There’s new news as of October ‘06 about Subaru’s forthcoming diesel flat four. The details varu slightly depending on what web sites you read, but the engine is all alloy, and will be launched in late 2007 (probably the 2008 model year?) Legacy and Tribeca models. he engines will be 2.0 or 2.2 litres, and turbocharged. Check the following links for more info:

It sounds like the diesel will have the same bellhousing bolt pattern ‘The engine would be compatible with its iconic symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, used on about two-thirds of its vehicles’, which is excellent news for us VW converters. Hopefully we will be able to get hold of one from a damaged car to check out the installation into a VW soon after they are launched. If the bellhousing bolt pattern is different, a new bellhousing will be designed as soon as an engine is available.
