Subaru Engine Choice Based on VW Type:

The following VW models are rated in terms of how much work is involved in fitting a Subaru conversion using parts from RJES. Each is rated against the following key, and a brief explanation of what is involved is included with each.

    Key:
1/5      Very straight forward. No welding, and only very minor modifications required.
2/5      Not too difficult. No major modifications needed
3/5      Not too difficult. Limited welding, but no significant body modifications required
4/5      A fairly major job. Some body modifications needed, including cutting and welding
5/5      A large job, requiring major body modifications

The commonly converted VW models are listed. No doubt many other types of rear engined VW could be converted too. The notes below generally don’t discuss work which is common to air cooled models (such as fitting a radiator or injection fuel system), as the work involved in this is the same for all Subaru engines, but the work involved is taken into account in the ratings:

   Water cooled T25 (‘83 - ‘90 / ‘92) - 1/5

   Air Cooled T25 (‘80 - ‘82)      - 2/5

   Early Bay Bus (pre ‘73)       - 3/5

   Late Bay Bus (‘73 - ‘79)        - 4/5

   Split Screen Bus           - 3/5

   Beetle                  - 4/5 - 5/5

Please click on the links above for more details about what work is involved for each model

Note 1:  The work involved in modifying the additional chassis cross member in a late bay could be avoided by using an adaptor plate and flywheel instead of an RJES bell housing to join the engine and gearbox together. See Bell Housing vs Adaptor plate FAQ’s.

Note 2:  You can use a Subaru engine with a Beetle gearbox by using an adaptor plate and flywheel instead of an RJES bell housing to join the engine and gearbox together. See Bell Housing vs Adaptor plate FAQ’s.

Thank you.
